Garfield Simms

Partner & Managing Director, D.C. Operations

Garfield is the Practice Leader of Turner Brown’s Intellectual Property Practice Group, the Managing Director of Washington, D.C. Operations, and Leader of the Government Transitions Group. Prior to joining Turner Brown, Garfield practiced intellectual property law for 25 years in the Boston, Delaware and Washington, D.C. markets. He has experience litigating complex technologies involving bar code readers, data caching, electronic commerce, gallium nitride light emitting diodes (LEDs), optical sensors, power management systems in electronic devices and wireless technologies. Garfield has also prosecuted trademark and patent applications, and counseled clients regarding intellectual property rights for: biometric identification systems, electronic circuits, electromechanical and mechanical devices, internet security systems, medical diagnostic equipment and semiconductor devices and processes. 

 

Garfield brings his considerable experience and expertise to advising clients on achieving their hiring goals. As well, he provides counsel in important talent management areas including DEIA (diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility), efficiency, succession planning and talent acquisition and retention. Garfield is equally passionate about advising individual attorneys on career issues, assisting in evaluating and addressing issues related practice growth, and providing confidential and objective representation if and when they decide to explore career transitions. He leverages his background as a practicing attorney to offer dynamic insights to candidates as they consider potential moves.

Garfield holds a Juris Doctor from Northeastern University School of Law; a Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical Engineering from the University of Delaware; and a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Mathematics from Delaware State College.
